QUESTION: Is the airport open 24 hours a day? My flight departs at 6:00 a.m. and my airline suggests checking in 90 minutes before departure. Are you open at 4:30 a.m.?

ANSWER: The airport is a public building that is open 24/7, and the doors will be open when you arrive at 4:30 a.m. Please keep in mind however that each airline has their own hours of operation. Please contact your airline directly for their specific hours of operation at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport

QUESTION: The flight information display screens (FIDS) are often incorrect or do not seem to be updated frequently. Why is this?

ANSWER: The Airport's Flight Information Display System, or FIDS, provides a consistent and easy-to-read way for airlines to display their flight arrival and departure times throughout the terminal building. Although the system is supplied and maintained by the airport, the information displayed is provided by the individual airlines. Although the information is generally very accurate, there are several reasons why flight information provided by an airline may not be accurate for a particular flight. The most accurate information regarding flight arrival and departure time and status can be obtained directly from your airline. If you are at the airport, you can obtain current information at your airline's ticket counter or gate podium. If you are not at the airport, you can usually contact your airline by telephone. Many airlines also allow you to obtain flight information interactively on the Internet. You can find contact information for the airlines that operate at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport by clicking on the following link: Airline Contact Information.

QUESTION: On January 8, 2005, I arrived at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport to pick up some friends. Unfortunately, due to the weather, their flight did not arrive on time. It was difficult to get accurate information. The airport was closing, opening, diverting and canceling flights. It was very frustrating.

ANSWER: Between December 28, 2004 and January 11, 2005, the Truckee Meadows experienced record snowfall of 81 cummulative inches. The Airport Authority Snow Crews worked diligently 24/7 to remove the snow from the runways, taxiways, and ramp areas. Their dedication and hard work allowed the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) to remain open for all but twelve hours during this twelve day period of time, when heavy snowfall made it difficult to keep the runways operational. Unfortunately, January 8, 2005 was one of the days when the weather caused flight delays and cancellations. We regret any inconvenience that you experienced due to irregular operations at RTIA. To receive the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is recommend that you call your airline prior to coming to the airport. In closing, please understand that Customer Service is extremely important to us, but safety will always come first.

QUESTION: I’ll be traveling with my two small children this summer. What travel tips can you offer for flying out of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport?

ANSWER: The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recommends the following:

  • Arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to your scheduled departure time, although, it is best to check with your specific airline for recommended check-in time.
  • Most airlines recommend that when traveling with children, you carry a copy of their birth certificate.
  • Only ticketed passengers will be allowed through security checkpoints. Therefore, if you are traveling with a non-ticketed, lap child under the age of two years, you will need to receive a document from your airline in order for the child to pass through a security checkpoint.
  • If you are traveling with a baby/toddler in a stroller, you and your family can access the security checkpoint through the “special needs” line located near the front of the security entrance. This should help speed up the screening process.
  • Most airlines offer pre-boarding to passengers traveling with small children. We recommend that you check with your specific carrier for details on their particular policy.
