03-10-2016 - Record-Setting Year in Passenger and Cargo Numbers

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) saw year-over-year growth in passenger numbers in 2015, for the first time since 2005. RNO served 3,432,657 passengers in 2015, representing an increase of 3.9% when compared to the year 2014.

“This is tremendous news, not only for the airport, but for the entire Reno-Tahoe region,” said President and CEO Marily Mora.

The rise in passenger counts can be attributed to the hard work of the Airport Board of Trustees and staff to bring new air service, with added flights and airlines in 2015. In addition, the growing regional economy and enhanced relationships with our partners in tourism, business, ski and more, coming together to attract travelers to the region.

The month of December 2015 was also up in passenger counts and significantly higher than December 2014. Reno-Tahoe International Airport served 286,432 passengers in December 2015, which is up 8.6% versus December 2014. In fact, the airport has experienced positive passenger growth for the past seven consecutive months.

Air cargo is also experiencing record lift. The year 2015 was the best year recorded at RNO in terms of air cargo. During the year 2015, RNO handled 138,276,979 pounds of air cargo, an increase of 7.1% when compared to the year 2014.

In December 2015, RNO handled 17,907,699 pounds of cargo, an increase of 13.5% when compared to December 2014.  December 2015 was the tenth consecutive month of air cargo growth at RNO, indicating continued strength in the economy as well as the growing business diversification in Northern Nevada.

“The presence of major warehousing, pharmaceutical, e-commerce and distribution facilities in the region play a key role in cargo growth at RNO,” said Mora. “In addition, growth in industrial development areas such as the Tahoe/Reno Industrial Center has continued to help spur cargo growth and economic diversity.”

Reno-Tahoe International Airport currently offers 56 peak-day non-stop departures to 20 destinations on eight commercial airlines, with 185,508 monthly seats available. In the past year, non-stop daily service has been added to New York City, Boise, Orange County, Oakland, Los Angeles and a third weekly flight to Guadalajara, Mexico.
