05-03-2016 - Airport Police Earn Nationwide Accreditation

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s Police Department was recently re-certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), a distinction held by less than 1% of airport law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Law enforcement agencies like the Reno-Tahoe Airport Police Department earn CALEA certification by demonstrating compliance and having assessors from other certified agencies audit policies to ensure agency standards are met. Only 12 other commercial airports in the United States are CALEA certified.

“Our airport police are specially trained to deal with travel-specific safety issues and are clearly one-percenters when it comes to compliance,” said RNO Airport Police Chief Robert Vester. “We’re proud to be recognized with this distinction.”

CALEA was founded to create national standards and best practices for law enforcement agencies. These practices are at the heart of every law enforcement agency’s duties and responsibilities. They guide and support agency managers to develop policies, procedures and practices consistent with recognized standards.

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Police earned the initial certification in 2013.
