RELEASE – Pre-COVID Traffic Expected during Memorial Day at Reno-Tahoe International Airport

RENO, Nev. – A new pandemic record for passenger traffic is set to hit Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) over Memorial Day weekend, as pent-up travel demand and several new non-stop destinations fuel the airport’s recovery. 

Over 12,500 passengers will arrive and depart each day this holiday weekend and those number are expected to rise during summer, especially on peak travel days, Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. With additional non-stop service to Charlotte on American, Jackson Hole on Allegiant, Orange County and Burbank on Southwest, and Las Vegas and Oakland on JSX, travelers can get more places more often. But it also means a busier airport, so arriving at least 90 minutes to two hours prior to departure will help ensure a less stressful travel experience.

Allowing time for parking, airline check-in and TSA security lines is vitally important throughout the summer. Although RNO is known for being a quick, convenient airport, the increase in passenger traffic will also affect parking. Travelers may consider finding a ride due to limited parking capacity.

Additionally, airport tenants around the country are experiencing a hiring shortage, so patience and understanding are appreciated. RNO’s Paws 4 Passengers therapy dogs will also be on hand May 28 and 31 to greet travelers and help ease the stress of holiday travel.

Below are additional travel tips to help make the airport experience a pleasant one:

* Arrive at least 90 minutes to two hours prior to your flight.  

Allow extra time for parking and rental car returns. Watch for signage for overflow lots. Follow the airport on social media to be alerted to lot closures.

To expedite the Transportation Security Administration security screening process:

• Empty pockets, remove shoes, jewelry, personal electronic devices, and place them in the bins provided.

• Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to remove coats, jackets, and all outerwear.

• Know the TSA 3-1-1 rule for carry-on bags at www.tsa.gov. Liquids, gels, and aerosols must be packed in a one-quart plastic baggie.

• Food brought through security typically requires extra screening.

• Sign up for automated airline flight status alerts sent directly to your smart phone and download boarding passes at home.

Despite the CDC easing its mask guidelines, all travelers are required to wear face coverings in airports and on planes through September 13 regardless of proof of vaccination.
